Sketch Of The Week June 03/09

cyber-pirate This week’s Sketch of the Week is brought to you again in Technicolor! The themes are medieval cyber pirate.

When brainstorming about this concept sketch I had the idea of crossing pirates with the armor of a medieval knight.  Then just to add a little bit of the sci-fi element I threw in the cyber part. I’m starting to wonder if I have some sort of fascination with cyber people (see the cyber magician).

The blending of the cyber and the medieval armor was no problem.  I tried to make the design of the mechanics in the right arm a little lo-tech.  It just seems to make the cyber arm more realistic.  Not that a robotic arm on a pirate is realistic but it just looks more like an obsessed ironsmith could forge it together.   Of course no cyber pirate would be complete without his cyber eye patch.  Then throw in a few belt buckles for good measure (also a common theme between pirate and medieval).

I was running out of time so I really wanted to add some color quick.  So what goes fits both the theme of pirate and medieval?  Canvas maps of course!  I selected some colors to pull off that feel and added a thatch texture to drive it home.  Pop some highlights in for detail and wahala!

See ya next week,
A

  1. Much better than last week. Sorry I did not comment last week, but things are getting pretty crazy here. You’ll see.

Great pose. Very dynamic. I really like the mono-chromatic look, but that is just me.

I think the techno aspects are great, but there isn’t anything that really screams “arrrrrgggg, Pirate” to me. He could be a han solo ish type rouge of sorts, or even kind of Buck Rogers. I know you don’t want to get too campy, but some more Pirate specific accents could really give it that extra personality you are so great at.

It does look very good though. But I still feel like I need to let you know that you still suck. Jiggly Bean can build you up and tell you how great you are, but …
    You Suck!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I can agree with the screaming pirate theory. One person commented on facebook post that what it really need was a robotic parrot.

To give the drawing an excuse the pose somewhat limits the surface area of the figure to add extra pirate detail. But i should of found different ways to communicate that. Things like the beaded hair(a little overused) daggers, pouches, etc.

  3. I would of added some carvings in the armor. Something like script or a tribal design. I like the look of the arm but would of liked some hanging wires. But a good twist on the hook hand or peg leg.

  4. Kinda looks like a cyber samurai to me…maybe add a “skull & crossbones” somewhere or a pirate style hat. Oh, and definetly the parrot.
